Eating out in Suez is limited but adequate. Your best bet for seafood is the
Dolphin restaurant on Tariq El-Horiya, opposite the Social Club (which also does seafood), or
Abu Ali's on Sharia el-Geish, near the
White House. For good value
shawarma, sandwiches or baked macaroni, check out the
Sweet Spot, also on Sharia el-Geish, west of the
White House. For
kushari there's
Al Tabareh Restaurant on Sharia Banque Misr near the
Star Hotel.
Drinking is even more limited, with only one bar, the Sant George (next to Sweet Spot), where you can be sure of finding Suez's expat community gathered in the evening.
You can change money at the Bank of Alexandria on Sharia el-Geish (daily: summer 9am-2pm & 5-8pm; winter 8am-2pm & 6-9pm), the National Bank of Egypt on Sharia Sa'ad Zaghloul (Sun-Thurs 8.30am-2pm & 5-8pm), private exchanges in the souk, or the Banque du Caire in Port Tewfiq (Sun-Thurs 8.30am-2pm & 5-8pm). Also in Port Tewfiq is Menatours (tel 069/228-821), the agents for American Express (beside the tourist police) and a branch of the post office - the main one is on Sharia Hoda Sharawi, in the centre of town (both daily except Fri 8am-3pm). You can make international calls from the telephone exchange (daily 8am-midnight) on the corner of Sa'ad Zaghloul and el-Shahada, or extend your visa at the passport office (Sat-Thurs 8am-2pm) inside police headquarters on Sharia Horriya; as always, arrive early with your passport and photo, a pen, something to read and a sense of humour.
