The "sights"
between Alexandria and El-Alamein are relatively neglected by tourists, in some cases deservedly so. Getting there can involve much toing and froing around unsignposted crossroads miles from anywhere and, without your own transport, none of the places below are easy to reach as stops en route to El-Alamein or Mersa Matrouh. If you're using public transport, it's better to consider them as day excursions from Alex. Conversely, there are many new
holiday villages along the highway to Matrouh. Some are reserved for elite sections of Egyptian society such as the army, navy and diplomatic corps, while others cater to anyone wealthy enough to afford an apartment there. If you have a car and loads of money, their gorgeous beaches and middling to luxurious facilities could be worth investigating. Otherwise, they're simply blights on the landscape that induce a numbing fatalism, as one succeeds another, for mile after mile.
