Aside from those arriving from Israel or Jordan, most travellers approach the gulf coasts from
Cairo ,
Suez or
Hurghada , which generally entails following a zigzag route. Note, however, that most services to Taba and Nuweiba travel across the interior of the peninsula, avoiding both gulf coastlines for much of the way.
" Most people come from Cairo by bus from the Sinai Terminal ( Mahattat Seena) in the Abbassiya district, or from Turgoman Garage behind the Ramses Hilton in downtown Cairo - from where you can also catch the overnight (11pm) Superjet bus to Sharm. Check schedules and reserve seats the day before (earlier during Ramadan). Eight East Delta buses run daily to Sharm el-Sheikh (7-8hr; ŁE50-65); four to Dahab (9hr; ŁE55-70); four to Nuweiba (8-10hr; ŁE55-70), three of which carry on to Taba (9hr; ŁE65) and one to St Catherine's Monastery (8hr; ŁE55). All services are A/C, offer on-board snacks and halt at one or two resthouses en route; refreshments are expensive. To save on fares, consider travelling via Suez instead (which most direct buses bypass). At the time of writing, some buses were leaving from the Sinai terminal and some from Turgoman, but the latter seems likely to have frequent departures on all these routes in future.
Rapid access to Sharm and great views of the peninsula might entice those with plenty of cash onto EgyptAir flights . There are at least three flights daily (except Fri, one flight only at 6.30pm) from Cairo to Sharm (US$138 one-way). There is currently only one flight weekly to Taba from Cairo (Mon 8am), but this looks set to increase as the new Taba Heights resort becomes fully operational.
" Suez City is the interchange for numerous buses coming from Hurghada, Cairo or northern Sinai. Buses leave from the Arba'in terminal going to Sharm el-Sheikh (5 daily; 5-6hr; ŁE25), Dahab (daily at noon; 7-8hr; ŁE30), Nuweiba (daily at noon & 3pm; 6-7 hr; ŁE30), Taba (daily at 3pm; 7-8 hr; ŁE30) and St Catherine's (daily at 2pm; 6hr; ŁE25). Service taxis leave from just outside the bus station for Dahab (ŁE35), St Catherine's (ŁE20), Nuweiba (ŁE25) and Sharm el-Sheikh (ŁE25).
" The third option is to travel directly from Hurghada to Sharm by air (Mon 3.30am, Sat 6am, Sun 11.30pm; one-way US$95) or sea , or charter a seven-seater taxi for the 750km drive (ŁE700 shared among passengers).
" There are also thrice-weekly EgyptAir flights to Sharm from Luxor (Tues 9.30pm, Thurs & Sat 9.15pm; one-way US$123) and two a week from Alexandria (Mon & Fri 8.45am; one-way US$185).
